So, why we say Computer-Delivered IELTS is far better than old pen-paper based test?
There are many advantages. Let’s discuss 5 main reasons why you should go for it
If you’ve ever taken the paper-based IELTS writing test you will know that writing is physically TOUGH! Being a non-native speakers of English, we have trouble in forming perfect sentences and structuring our paragraphs. Moreover, we really struggle to write on paper with a pencil. If you do not have practice and if you write for more than 15 minutes your hands will start paining. Touch typing, in contrast, is very easy. You will not be distracted by an aching hand or a burned out pencil in the computer-based IELTS.
We did many experiments through our students. We timed them for writing a 250-word writing task 2 essay. What we found is, writing on paper, it takes around 35 minutes. Guess how long it took for them to type 250 words? Around 20 minutes! They had at least 10 minutes to edit their essay. So, the extra time allowed them to read their essay before submitting it.
When you write with a pencil you have to think of the sentence in your head before you write it out because there is no ‘backspace’ and there certainly is no cursor to add a word or phrases here or there. If you do want to go back and restructure a sentence you have to put in arrows or strikethroughs and it ends up looking like a dog’s breakfast. While typing, students can go back to previous sentences and either completely rewrite them, or can make small edits to them. This allows students to write a really well structured and logically cohesive essay.
As you type, the number of words you have written appears on the screen in front of you. In the paper-based IELTS you have to count those words and it takes away precious time! You don’t have to worry about it in this case. Word count will be visible to you.
The ultimate thing about the computer-delivered IELTS test is that the questions or the graph is always at the top left-hand side of the screen. You don’t have to browse the page over to see it like in the paper-based test. It means that you can constantly make sure that what you are writing is on topic and on the right track.
